Numbers and Shapes

Sorting Pom poms with Tongs!

They can have fun while perfecting color sorting, manipulating tongs, and counting. It can even be a good opportunity for bilingual skill building by naming colors and numbers in a second language.

Children use the tongs to pick up the colored pom poms and drop them into small plastic cups. This activity is good for  fine motor practice and hand-eye coordination. On the cups i wrote a number from 1 to 3 to help them reinforce the value of each number.

Pegs

I loved this idea for its simplicity and effectiveness. This activity really keeps the children absorbed and concentrated.  I put some pegs in 5 different containers and gave them to 5 children from the class. At first they did not know what they should do but when I showed them to clip the pegs on the sides of the container one by one they were excited and tried to peg them very carefully. I am amazed at how this activity keeps the children absorbed and the sense of accomplishment when done is priceless.  The trick for this activity is that children have to use fine motor skill practise, this will be beneficial as they are strengthening their fingers ready for writing as they have to use only 3 fingers (the thumb and the first 2 finger). Once all pegs have been pegged, they have to unpeg the sides and put them back in the containers. The whole process gives a true sense of accomplishment to the children!

                                              Sorting Colours

Sorting Coloured Bottle Tops promotes:
  • Literacy: Connecting the written word with the colour.
  • Language skills: naming, labelling and discussions about what objects are made of certain colours.
  • Reinforce and extend learning about colours.
  • Fine motor development and eye hand coordination.

This month we are going to start introducing the recognition of the number 1!
